How to be a Jersey Girl: Learning Football Culture in 2012

The 2012 NFL season is fast approaching – September 5th it all goes down as the Dallas Cowboys take on the New York Giants in a bizarre Wednesday night kickoff.

You can almost feel the dam of testosterone laden regional pride about to burst forth in a jersey clad, teeth baring, chest beating explosion of beer and body paint. Hell, you can almost taste it.

After two seasons of being the woman who watches from the sidelines I’ve decided to .. how do they say it? Ah yes – “make an effort” to finally learn the ins and outs of football.

I have my reasons for being almost 30 and almost completely football ignorant – I’m from so far north that having a hometown football team didn’t make sense for “snow reasons”.

But I’m in the south now – where it’s everywhere, not the least of which, in my living room… every Sunday… and I want in.

Plus, I’m an intelligent well-read person with a few degrees and certifications; I can learn this game… Right?

I guess we’ll find out :S

At the very least, I know that I learn best by “doing” – in this case, watching, following, discussing and writing.  So, I’m going to watch, pester my boyfriend, read up, talk about and blog my way through the 2012-2013 season.

As my one disclaimer, I do NOT want to write about the NFL like an expert or infiltrate the boys club.

In truth, I’ll be happy if I can blog my way through the season without making a mockery of the institution – but I’ll be happier still if I can find the joy.

Let’s play ball? ;)
